AKA: Devil's Dung, Asafetida, Assafoestida, Food of the gods
Parts Used: Oleo-Gum-Resin
Active Compounds: Volatile oil up to 17% that is made up of disulphides; resin, which contains sesquiterpenoid coumarins with foetidin; and gum.
Background: As early as 4 BC, Asafoetida was touted as a favored ingredient by Alexander the Great in Rome. In the 7th century, Hindus proclaimed it a wonder medicine to treat bloating and gas symptoms. The resin gum is used liberally in vegetarian dishes in India. Today, it is a flavoring most commonly associated with Worcestershire sauce.
Applications: Digestion/Headache/Antidote/Expectorant
Although the herb has been used to treat neurotic disorders by easing anxiety, its primary uses are less related to mental conditions and more focused on bodily functions.
Digestion: Asafoetida is commonly used to treat bloating and gas to prevent flatulence, but it also quells stomach cramps, eases indigestion, and relieves constipation.
Headaches: Using the dried gum, this herb helps relieve headache pain and shows promise in treating migraines and tension headaches when mixed with water.
Antidote: Efficient in preventing snake bites and repelling insects when mixed with garlic.
Expectorant: Volatile oil helps relieve the body of mucous and eases the respiratory system. Has been known to aid in whooping cough, asthma, and bronchitis.
Description:
It is known as Devil's Dung because of it's foul odor, which stems from the resin taken from the thick stems and root of two large species of fennel that are members of the carrot family. It is a perennial that grows in Afghanistan and Iran to heights of up to 12 feet in the wild. White flowers are present in the umbels.
Dosage:
Tincture: Mix 2 ounces root gum with 6 ounces alcohol and let sit for 14 days, shaking once a day. Use 15-20 drops in 6 ounces fluid.
Safety:
Asafoetida is not to be used for young babies.
