Background: Couch grass root has been recommneded for urinary tract problems since the time of ancient Greece and Rome. In the sixteenth centruy, it was still considered good for the liver and the urinary tract.
At one time a decoction of couchgrass was a popular drink taken in the spring time. It was thought to purify the blood. In France today this is still a very popular method for improving health and urinary function.
It has been observed that cattle, including sheep and goats, have improved health in the spring when they begin eating this herb.
Applications:Diuretic/Demulcent
Couch grass root is most commonly used to treat urinary tract problems. It's a remedy for ulcers and liver problems as well.
Diuretic: Couch grass is commonly used to protect the urinary tubules from problems with infection and irritaiton. It causes the volunte of urine to increase.
Kidney Stones: Couch grass is also used to aid the dissolving process of kidney stones. It will also prevent kidney stones from becoming larger.
Prostate Health: Couchgrass is thought to relieve an enlarged prostate or a prostate inflammation when taken over a long period of time.
Ulcers: Couchgrass seeds are used in a compress applied to the belly to soothe peptic ulcers. The compress must be hot and wet.
Description:
Couch grass is a widely grwoing grass. It has long, creeping leaves. It has flowers that are green and are allighned in two rows. Couch grass is found all over the world and is a weed that can choke out other plant growth. It can be harvested year round.
Couchgrass Dosage:
A decoction may be taken up to three times a day made with 2 tsp of rhizomes boiled in water for 10 minutes.
2-4 mL tincture can be taken three times a day.
