Background: Psyllium is a common plant in Europe, Asia, and the northern part of the African continent. It has been used for centuries as a powerful laxative. Because they have such a high fiber content, the seeds swell when they come in contact with water. This causes them to help move food through the intestines effectively. The seeds are very small and dark in color. They look like fleas and have given the nickname flea seed because of this appearance. While the seeds are useful for treating constipation, the husks are also beneficial. They're used to treat hemorrhoids and boils. Oddly enough, while psyllium works as a laxative, it also works to treat diarrhea. Its effect seems to be to get the intestines to function properly all around.

Applications:Laxative/Demulcent/Antidiarrheal

Psyllium is primarily used to treat problems with constipation and diarrhea.

Laxative: Psyllium works as a laxative by their high fiber content. They help to keep a lot of water in the intestines which allows bowel movements to occur more easily.

Hemorrhoids:: Psyllium husks can help to relieve the pain of hemorrhoids by causing the bowel to become softer. This keeps the vein from becmoing irritated.

Diarrhea: Psyllium helps to treat diarrhea. It allows the body to pass more normal stool. It also helps to regulate the body when suffering from conditions such as Chron's disease and irritable bowel syndrome.

Stomach: Psyllium helps to relieve stomah discomfort from ulcers and indigestion.

Skin: Psyllium husks can be made into a poutlice to be used externally. This poultice will help to treat skin infections such as boils.

Description:
Psyllium is an annual plant that is native to Europe, Asia, and Africa. It grows as talla s 16 inches high. It has green leaves and small whitish brown flowers. The seeds are picked when they become ripe in the fall or late summer.

Dosage:

As a poultice, apply to externally to boils or abscesses.

As a capsule, take 200 mg 3 times daily for hemorrhoids.

As a cold maceration, soak 20 g of psyllium seeds in 200 ml of water. Allow to soak for 10 hours and take before bed.

Safety:
Take with plenty of water. Do not take more than the recommended dose. Consult your health care provider before beginning use of any herb.
