





Scientific Name: Acorus calamus-Araceae Family
AKA: Vacha, Bach, Gladdon, Sweet Flag, Agri-turki, Sweet Root, Myrtle Grass, Cinnamon Sedge, Sweet Rush, Baje, Myrtle Grass, Sweet Cane.
Parts Used: Leaves
Active Compounds: Volatile oil, Pinene, Asaryl aldehyde, acoretin, tannin and starch.
Background: A semi-aquatic perennial, it is found throughout the world in marshes and other moist environments. Especially prolific in India and Burma, growing near rivers and lakes.
Applications: Tonic/Stomachic/Ointment
Tonic: Helps in digestion and stimulates appetite.
Stomachic: Used for gastritis, ulcers and for the relief of dyspeptic disorders.
Ointment: Aids in treatment of angina, diseases of the gums and rheumatic disorders.
Description:
Clamus is a reed-like, aquatic plant that produces green flowers, but no fruit. Calamus grows from 60 to 100 cm in height and has a stem that is triangular. Its leaves appear in two rows and have no stems. Calamus is a very pleasantly fragrant plant.
Calamus Dosage:
Tonic: Steep dried root in hot water and drink as a tea.
Stomachic: Chew the dried root or make an infusion using one pint of boiling water with 1 ounce of dried root. Drink as a tea.
Ointment: Used as a powder or paste, apply to afflicted area.
