Background: Pennyroyal was used in ancient times to purify water and as a medicine. It was used to induce menstruation and child birth. In modern herbal medicine it is used for even more. Pennyroyal can be used as a tonic for the digestive system. It can also be used to treat respiratory infections and headache.
Applications:Tonic/Stimulant
Pennyroyal is used as a tonic and muscle stimulant.
Tonic: Pennyroyal may be used as a tonic for the digestives sytem. It helps to reduce gas and flatulence. Pennyroyal may also be used for treating intestinal parasites such as worms.
Stimulant: Pennyroyal causes the uterine muscles to contract. It can help to induce menses.
Skin: Pennyroyal may be used to treat skin irriation including eczema and itching.
Joints: Pennyroyal may be used to treat gout and rheumatism.
Description:
Pennyroyal is perennial plant that is arromatic. It is native to Asia and Europe, but now grows in the Americas as well. It is most commonly found in damp climates and the aerial parts are harvested during the summer.
Dosage:
As a tincture, take 1-2 ml with water 3 times daily.
As an infusion, add 1-2 tsp dried herb to 1 cup boiling water. Infuse for 10-15 minutes and drink 3 times daily.
Safety:
Do not use the essential oil. Do not take during pregnancy or if you have heavy menstrual bleeding. Consult your health care provider before beginning use of any herb.
