Background:Senna is not only used in herbal remedies, but it can also be found in many commercial drugs. It is best known for its ability to relieve constipation. On its own, it has a very bitter taste that can even make your stomach hurt. However, when it's mixed with other herbs, it can be tolerated. Senna works by causing the large intestine to suddenly contract causing a bowel movement. It also helps to keep stool from becoming hard in the intestine by slowing down the absorbtion of water by the lining.
Applications:Constipation
Senna is primarily used for intestinal problems.
Constipation: Senna is used to relieve acute constipation.
Description:
Senna is a perennial shurb that is native to Africa. It is still found there. The leaves and pods are used for medicinal purposes and are picked in the fall.
Dosage:
As a decoction, add 3-6 pods and 1 g of ginger to 1 cup boiling water. Steep for 6-12 hours. Strain and drink for constipation.
Tincture may be taken for constipation if prescribed by an herbal medine practitioner.
Tablets may be taken. Follow the manufacturer's instructions on the label.
Safety:
Senna should not be taken by children under 12. It should not be taken during pregnancy. Do not tkae Senna for more than 10 days in a row. Consult your health care provider before beginning use of any herb.
