Background: If you encounter horsetail in nature, you probably won't want to hold it too tightly. It has an abrasive nature that has given it many good uses throughout history. Horsetail, as its nickname suggests, has been used for cleaning bottles. It has also been tied to the tails of horses to be used as a sort of flyswatter. It's also been used to polish metal and wooden surfaces.
While it has many practical uses for the every day household, it also has medicinal properties. It helps to stop bleeding - which can aid in healing of many parts of the body. It also helps to imrpove rissue reapir and treat arthritis. Finally, horsetail can be used to treat sprains and skin irritations.

Horsetail is primarily used to stop bleeding.
Bleeding: Horsetail can be used to help stop bleeding of wounds, nosebleeds, or even internal bleeding. In particular, horsetail helps to stop the bleeding in the urinary system. It's useful in treating prostate problems, urethritis, and cystitis.
Joint Pain: Horsetail may be used in a bath to help heal sprains and broken bones as well as relieve joing pain.
Skin: Horsetail can be used externally to treat eczema.
Description:
Horsetail, native to Europe, Asia, Africa, and the Americas, is a perennial plant. It has a yellow stem and needle-like leaves. The stems are used for medicinal purposes and are picked in the summer.
Dosage:
As an infusion, boil 2 tsp horsetail in 1 cup water for 20 minutes. Drink 3 times daily.
As a bath, steep 3.5 ounces of horsetail in hot water for one hour. Add to warm bath.
As a tincture, take 2-6 ml per day.
Safety:
Do not take horsetail for more than 6 weeks unless supervised by a health care professional. Pregnant women should not take horsetail. You should not use horsetail if you have problems with frequent urination. Consult your health care provider before beginning use of any herb.
