Set of 15 igneous rocks, 15 metamorphic rocks, 15 sedimentary rocks. Samples are approximately 1-1/2 to 2 inch chunks. Igneous rocks are formed from the a molten state. Igneous rocks have cooled and crystallized deep beneath the surface of the earth, or have reached the surface through cracks and fissures. Metamorphic Rocks can be formed by different processes. Generally they are recrystallized in the solid state by pressure and heat, and may be influenced by the introduction of solutions. Igneous, sedimentary, and pre-existing metamorphic may become new metamorphic rocks. The change may be partial and some of the original characteristics may be retained, or it may be so complete that new minerals are formed and the textures altered completely. Sedimentary Rocks are those derived from pre-existing rocks through the process of erosion, followed by compaction, or chemical precipitation (weathering & re-bonding).
