The tools, techniques and raw materials used to make these besoms are from an 1878 broom shop. They are made to be used, and made from the highest quality broomcorn and kiln dried hardwoods. These brooms are noticeably more functional, and durable, than commercial counterparts.
Besom is the old-world term for a broom which is used for more than just sweeping. Before the advent of commercial broom companies and the practical, flat, Shaker-style broom, brooms were sown round and usually left untrimmed. Local craftsmen might make an annual batch of besoms out of the locally available, indigenous materials and sell or trade them to village residents as well as merchants traveling through to larger markets.
