These transfers have an opaque white background so nothing shows through. Any area of the image that is shown as white will remain white. Therefore, it's best to trim your print close to the image before ironing.
HEAT PRESS APPLICATION
The best results are obtained using a commercial heat press. This is a "clam shell" device which applies heat and high pressure for a set amount of time. Unfortunately, they are expensive. If you can get the use of one, use as follows:
Preheat the heat press to 325 (300 for 50/50 garments).
Preheat the garment in the heat press to remove excess moisture & wrinkles. Allow it to cool completely.
Trim image. Carefully remove and discard the paper backer (lined side) from the transfer.
Put the image face UP on the garment. Lay the ironing sheet (included), or baking parchment over the surface of the transfer design.
Press for 15 seconds using medium pressure (15-20 using medium/heavy pressure for 50/50 garments).
Allow garment to cool completely and remove the ironing sheet. Save the ironing sheet as it is reusable on both sides.
HOT IRON APPLICATION
Use a hard flat surface - like a counter top is recommended. Do not use a glass or metal surface, or an ironing board.
Empty iron of water. You do not want to use steam setting!
Lay the garment on a hard work surface and preheat it with the iron to remove excess moisture & remove wrinkles. Allow the fabric to cool completely.
Trim the image as desired. Carefully remove and discard the paper backer (lined side).
Put the image face up on the garment. Lay the ironing sheet (included) over the surface of the transfer.
Use medium/firm pressure, slide the iron up an ddown, keeping iron moving constantly. Make sure to cover the edges of the image completely. For large design iron 1-1/2 minutes. For smaller designs iron 45 seconds to 1 minute.
Allow the garment to cool completely and remove the ironing sheet. Save the ironing sheet as it is reusable on both sides. For 50/50 garments - wool setting, 1-1/2 minutes using medium-heavy pressure.
LAUNDRY INSTRUCTION
Always turn the garment inside out to protect the design.
Wash in warm or cold water only.
Plain detergent is ok, but do not use bleach or detergents containing whiteners, brighteners, bleaches, etc. These will fade the design.
Remove from washer immediately and tumble dry on low or air/fluff setting. The water-soluble ink on the transfer can bleed if garment is left wet, or hung to dry. You must tumble dry to prevent this.
If the garment needs ironing, don't iron directly on the transfer, cover it with the ironing sheet to protect the design.
TIPS
Remember that areas of the paper which are white and not trimmed away will transfer white to your garment. So trim all the areas not printed on away, or trim to a nice shape.
If you start to see the color of the shirt coming through the transfer, you have ironed the transfer too long or the iron is too hot. Try reducing the setting of the iron first to see if this will correct the problem. Due to the differences in irons the temperature setting for cotton can vary greatly depending on the specific iron. If using a heat press and this problem occurs, try the following - a) reduce pressure, b) reduce temperature, c) reduce time.
To preserve the image for the longest time, save the reusable ironing sheet and lightly touch up the image for about 5-10 seconds after each washing. Remember to let the ironing sheet completely cool prior to removing.
One key to success with these, besides using enough heat and pressure, is to wash them a day after doing the transfer or before exposure to rain, because any excess ink can run, just like with any other dye.
