Parts Used: The root and the flowers
Active Compounds: The volatile oil contains thymol, mucilage, and polysaccharides. Arnica also contains flavonoids and sesquiterpene lactones. The bitter yellow principle is Arnicin and there is also a bit of tannin and phulin in it.
Background: Arnica is legendary in Europe and was even touted as a medicine to relieve Johann Wolfgang von Goethe's angina.
Applications: Expectorant/Skin Healant/Seizures/Hair Loss
Arnica has been used in different ways. Some people have found that it relieves seasickness and has lessened the symptoms of epilepsy. Others use it to treat topical skin problems, such as bruising, sprains or muscle pain as it reduces swelling.
Arnica is also used as a treatment in restoring hair growth when mixed as a tincture and applied topically. However Arnica is used, small doses must be used because topically, it can cause blisters and internally, if you are sensitive to it, it can result in nausea or even poisoning.
If taken properly, it can act as an anti-inflammatory and can increase circulation to help treat a weak cardiovascular system. It is also suspected of helping the re-absorption process when there is internal bleeding.
Description:
Arnica is a perennial plant that grows in mountainous woods and pastures in Europe, Siberia, Canada, and the United States. It reaches a height of up to 2 feet and produces flat leaves in a rosette formation from which orange-yellow flowers emerge from June to August.
The rhizome is a brown, cylinder shape that has wiry roots beneath it. It is planted in May and when the flowers bloom, they are collected and dried. The root is harvested in the fall.
Dosage:
Tincture: For the root, 10-30 drops. For the flowers, 10-30 drops.
Safety:
Only use Arnica under a doctor's supervision. If ingested orally, it can result in poisoning or nausea. External use can result in blistering and surface pain.
