Tarot When the tarot was first used for divination is unknown, as no documented examples exist prior to the 1700's. However divination using similar cards is in evidence as early as 1540. Tarot was adopted by mystics, occultists and secret societies beginning in the 1700's when DeGebelin asserted that the symbolism represented the mysteries of Isis & Thot, and that the word tarot came from Egyptian words tar (royal), and ro (road), and therefore the tarot represented a royal road to wisdom.
